The Golden Jubilee celebration is set to become a momentous occasion in the glorious history of His Majesty’s reign. It will be marked with popular activities in the month of October, along with a host of special events throughout the year that will see the involvement of all sections of the rakyat and residents of Brunei Darussalam.

Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ’Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien was the 28th Sultan of Brunei who ruled from 4 June, 1950 until his voluntary abdication on 4 October, 1967. The announcement read: “It is with clear and honest intention and without any dispute or ill feeling that I, Sir Omar ’Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, announce to my fellow Bruneians that it is my sincere wish to willingly abdicate the throne on 4 October, 1967. The decision is final and shall not be retracted. Therefore, I wish to assure the Brunei people that I have come to this decision of my own free will.”

At the age of 21, the young military officer, Pengiran Muda Hassanal Bolkiah, discovered that the mantle of the kingship had been draped around him. The Crown Prince was installed as the 29th Ruler of Brunei in a short ceremony at Istana Darul Hana, witnessed by state dignitaries as well as members of the Legislative Council. The new Sultan took on the title His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, Sultan of Brunei Darussalam.

During the installation ceremony, His Majesty somberly promised: “… I as Sultan of Brunei Darussalam will try my utmost to carry out the policies of my father, and shall always uphold peace and prosperity, and strive to maintain the good name of Brunei Darussalam. And, with Allah, The All Pure and Most Exalted’s will, I shall also continue and always safeguard and maintain in earnest the efforts to uphold the true image of Islam and the customs and traditions of Brunei.”

Even by today’s royal standards, the pomp and pageantry of the 1968 Royal Coronation Ceremony remained as one of the most magnificent ceremonies ever to be witnessed in the region. As a symbolic show of convergence, the ceremony to install the new young monarch combined ancient customs and traditions befitting the 600-year-old unbroken royal lineage of Brunei’s oldest Malay monarchy.

As with Brunei’s fifth ruler, Sultan Bolkiah (1485-1524), who ruled over what was considered by all to be Brunei’s Golden Age, His Majesty’s astute rule had brought about the reinstatement of the Legislative Council Assembly on 11 December 1967, enabling the nation’s budget to be ratified with continuous progression on the National Development Plans with good governance. His Majesty continues to remind his rakyat of Brunei’s extraordinary and unique cultural legacy, embedded in its national philosophy of Malay Islamic Monarchy (Melayu Islam Beraja), officially proclaimed on the day Brunei regained its sovereignty on 1 January, 1984. This has made Brunei an exceptional nation that has maintained its identity, culture and customs. The move has also ensured prosperity, and hope was brought to the nation, that their 29th Ruler will steer them towards greatness and success. The installation ceremony, in short, created an occasion for all to unite and celebrate as they look forward to His Majesty’s reign who promised to be a wise sovereign attentive to maintaining the tranquility and wellbeing of his rakyat and the country.

As a young sultan who made a promise, realised his own potential and took to his role with prudence and benevolence to become a highly effective leader, His Majesty had kept to his word in his role to develop and maintain Brunei Darussalam’s peace and prosperity.

Long Live Your Majesty!
