West Java’s capital offers picturesque vista and a town worth many exploring.

SEE Hike or take a ride to the Tangkuban Perahu, a stratovolcano in Lembang, just 30km from Bandung. Seen from the city, the mountain looks like an upturned boat, prompting a local legend that tells of its creation. On the way back, there are strawberry farms, a tea plantation and a floating market to break the journey.

DO Visit Saung Angklung Udjo for a taste of the local culture. This one-stop cultural workshop does not only sell handmade bamboo handicrafts, but also hold performances. Catch a snippet of wayang golek (puppet show), traditional dances and an angklung (traditional bamboo instrument) orchestra.

SHOP Jalan Riau, Jalan Setiabudi, Dago district and the Cihampelas areas are all shopping havens. Lined with factory outlets, you can get lost in the maze, but patience can bear fruitful bargains. If you want to bring back a taste of West Java, hop in to Kartika Sari for locally-made brownies and cakes.

STAY Mercure Bandung Setiabudi is a comfortable hotel perfect for your Bandung exploration. Rooms are cosy and spacious, with an even greater balcony that offers terrific views of the city. Don’t miss the heated pool that makes swimming anytime pleasant.

Royal Brunei Airlines flies Jakarta 6x weekly for connections to Bandung.
