Celebrating the best of colonial Malaya at the Colonial Cafe.

There is no better journey that could transport you to the days of old Malaya than through an epicurean adventure. At The Majestic Hotel Kuala Lumpur’s Colonial Cafe, the halcyon days of the planters of Malaya is recreated, along with a menu that offers authentic classical colonial cuisine.

It’s a cuisine that merges two culinary cultures in ways that have made the food unique in taste and flavour profile. These are traditional British meals that the Hainanese chefs attempted to recreate when they worked in English households in Malaya. Using local ingredients, a meal such as roasted chicken gets translated into the Hainanese Chicken Chop. Colonial Cafe’s interpretation is a beautiful golden, deep-fried succulent thigh dressed in an onion-infused gravy, sprinkled with green peas. Let the gravy linger a little and you’ll be able to taste the earthy tones of the Worcestershire sauce – a nod to a classic British kitchen must-have.

The Old-Style Hainanese Chicken Rice Ball is another perennial favourite. Apart from the wholesome flavourful rice, Colonial Cafe has cleverly retained its hand-pressed, spherical-shape presentation, harking back to the times when the rice-ball meals were transported as such for the convenience of the people working in the plantations. Meanwhile, the Traditional Hainanese Boiled Beef is a classic example of blending the virtues of Asian and Western cooking styles. Here fresh noodles swim in aromatic beef soup that is warm, satisfying and full of flavour. The choice of tender beef – brisket, back-ribs or sirloin – pays homage to the British cuisine that places emphasis on meats and its distinctive cuts.

Then there are the British classic game cookery, pies and puddings, featuring Traditional Beef Wellington, Spotted Dick and English Trifle. The Mulligatawny Soup, a glorious Indian-spiced soup that the British sometimes thickened with rice and meat, is a throwback to another time; fantastically rich and comforting at the same time.

A daily set menu is now available for both lunch and dinner throughout the week and customers can choose to have either a 3-course or a 4-course meal. The menus change daily and include a starter, main course and dessert. Each day features different favourites for the main course such as the Prime Rib of Angus Beef with Yorkshire Pudding, Pepper Crusted Roast Rack of Lamb, Roast Atlantic Cod Fish and Traditional Beef Wellington.

An example of a delightful Saturday set lunch is Homemade Lobster Bisque followed by Classic Fish and Chips with Homemade Fries, Mushy Peas and Pickled Onions; Warm Bread and Butter Pudding served with Hazelnut Ice Cream; and coffee or tea that makes a perfect ending. The three course set lunch or dinner is priced at RM90 ++ per person while the four course set lunch or dinner is available at RM 120++ per person.
