This much-loved island still has some tricks up its sleeve!
SEE Bali’s backwaters in the north are a cornucopia of culture. Venture into the various villages for a look at salt farms, whose production dates back over 900 years; cocoa and vanilla plantations, and spice farms where you come face-to-face with exotic harvests of cinnamon, black pepper and cloves, to name a few.
DO Take a tour of the padi fields. Discover the unique subak (irrigation) system. Then take a break in a warung (stall) or cafe that is often in the middle of the field for a meal of organic brown rice and homecooked dishes.
SHOP Make your way to Uluwatu stores. They make the softest cottons and comfortable linens matched with intricate woven lace ranging from casual to lounge wear.
STAY To get away from the crowd and experience the Bali of before, head to Spa Village Tembok Bali Resort. A secluded (but not boring) hideaway, it’s an escapist’s dream. A spa, a private beach, a tranquil setting and intimate service, this is the ultimate getaway.
