A city that’s always worth a visit.

SEE Transformed and extended thanks to a £15 million development project, the Whitworth Gallery reopened in 2015. Art lovers immediately fell in love with the Whitworth all over again. Its collection includes historic fine art by the likes of William Blake and Rossetti, contemporary art and sculpture, plus an internationally renowned textile collection of 20,000 pieces dating from the third century AD to the present.

DO Download the Official Manchester Walking Tours app, plug in your headphones, and take a self-guided walking tour of the city. There’s an Architectural Highlights tour and a Northern Quarter & NOMA tour, both created by official city tour guides, plus a Cultural Tour voiced by DJ and music journalist Mary Anne Hobbs.

SHOP For the city’s best independent shopping, head to the Northern Quarter. This once rundown area of Manchester city centre is now known for its hip stores, cafés, bars and creative spaces, offering a distinct alternative to the big brands found in the city’s mammoth shopping malls like Manchester Arndale and intu Trafford Centre.

STAY Open since December 2015 is King Street Townhouse – a baby grand hotel in a former bank with 40 rooms and suites, plus a forthcoming rooftop infinity spa pool. The latest property from Eclectic Hotels, its siblings include the well-regarded Great John Street Hotel.
