Bruneians take to art to express their love for their nation.

Broad and inspiring. That best describes the 389 paintings on canvas and art paper entries of “I Love Brunei Darussalam” painting contest, organised by The Brunei Times in conjunction with the 30th National Day of Brunei Darussalam.

With the theme “My Vision, Green Brunei”, the competition was opened to three categories: Primary (six-12 years old), Secondary (13-18 years old) and Open (19 years old and above). Despite the overwhelming response, a decision had to be made to shortlist only 20 paintings for the final round. Final judging was carried out by an eight-man panel comprising local artist, Dr Zakaria Hamid; CEO of Arkitek Idris, Dato Paduka Hj Idris Hj Abas; lecturers from Universiti Brunei Darussalam, Haji Osman Haji Mohammad and Professor Shui Kong Ho; freelance artist and art collector, Doris Chan; Creative Director of SyenSai MediaBaze, Syen Sofian; Managing Director of Arkitek Ting, Ting Tiu Peng; and CEO of Baiduri Bank, Pierre Imhof.

Hj Dayang Hj Mutalip was declared winner of the Open Category, winning a BND$3,000 Baiduri Bank savings account, an iPad and a Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf coffee machine. Siti Nursyafiqah Jefri won the primary category while Yeo Yeo the secondary category. Both bagged home BND$800 and BND1,000 savings accounts respectively.

The winning entries as well as other shortlisted categories in the Photography Competition and Old Photograph Competition were later showcased at Times Square for the public to view.
