Brunei’s food and beverage scene ups the notch in terms of sophistication and chicness – thanks to Alter Ego Fusion, a modern Asian fusion restaurant that’s all about stylish as well as delicious comfort food.

From the same people who brought you High Frequency Lifestyle Café in Brunei, is a trendy spot that’s fast making its way into every foodie’s
must-visit list: Alter Ego Fusion.

Located at Setia Kenangan 2 in Kiulap, the café is one of the most aesthetically pleasing cafes in town thanks to its intricate and unique interior. Walk in and you will be greeted by a striking duality of design; with one half exuding industrial style through the use of raw brick walls complemented by furnishings of wood and iron, while copper tables with contemporary marble tops oversee a hand-painted mural of the Amsterdam canal on the other half. Don’t mistake it for being cold and unapproachable though, as the restaurant amps up on personality with hanging plants and warm lighting in just about every corner, giving it a feel-good ambience that makes you want to hang around longer and soak up the atmosphere.

Naturally, you would expect the menu here to receive the same amount of detailed scrutiny that the café’s founders have put into its visual presentation. Rest assured that it is certainly the case. Offering what it calls Modern Asian Fusion, Alter Ego Fusion’s menu is a delightful mix of East Meets West with a twist of local flavours. Popular dishes include the Charred Grilled Avocado (Peruvian Ceviche with Lavosh Bread) and Mango Ricotta Bruschetta for light eats, and if you’re feeling really hungry, check out the Mandarin Short Ribs (braised Australian ribs with oriental spice honey glaze), Blackened Chicken (Cajun style oven-baked chicken covered in charred herbs and spices) and Seabass Meuniere (pan-seared seabass with rosti and bagna cauda sauce).

For those who must end their meal with a sweet offering, you won’t be disappointed at Alter Ego Fusion as the café has a wide range of cake and dessert options. Standout favourites include the classic French Frasier, Russian Honey Cake and Gula Melaka Cake – all simply irresistible for a satisfying end! Should you feel like something more sophisticated, the café provides plated desserts featuring interpretations of popular local desserts, such as the visually exquisite Deconstructed Cendul as well as Mango Sticky Rice.

Simply put, Alter Ego Fusion is that one café that you dream about having in your neighbourhood after coming across it during your holidays abroad. It will pave the way for even more eateries to flood your Instagram feed. It’s pretty apt then that the one thing that catches your eye at the café is a small chalkboard on the viewing table surrounded by greenery and canisters of exotic-flavoured teas from ETTE Tea (Nasi Lemak or Pandan Chiffon Tea anyone?) with the words “Brunei is Changing” written on it. We sure hope that this means more and more cafes just like Alter Ego Fusion will pop up to spoil us for choice!
