Experience island life in one of the jewels of the Aegean Sea.

SEE Go to Fira, the stunning old port town. You can take the cable car, ride a mule, or if you feel like burning calories, walk down the 580-odd steps to the port. Then join the daily tour to Nea Kameni, a still-active volcanic island and Agios Nikolaos for a swim in the famous thermal spas of Palea Kameni.

DO Rent an ATV and drive to Perissa for the Black Beach, or up to the Red Beach for a breathtaking view. Akrotiri is great for history buffs as it has one of the best preserved ancient settlements in Greece. If you are staying in Fira, you should travel to Oia for its unforgettable sunsets.

SHOP Forget kitschy souvenirs. Look out for local food products instead. The fertile volcanic soil that forms the island make for flavourful cherry tomatoes. Sun-dried is best. Another specialty is Chlorotiri (sour cheese made from goat’s milk) and white aubergines. Another of Santorini’s most sought after souvenirs are jewelleries. Best places for them are Porphyra and Kostas Antoniou.

STAY Canaves Oia provides solitude with a view. Away from the bustling crowd, you’ll not complain with rooms that boast of gorgeous balconies with caldera views. Built on the side of the hills, the luxurious suites are built from old cave houses indigenous to the area. And there’s a Jacuzzi in every room. Try to beat that!
